We’re thrilled to introduce a new Tanzanian coffee here at Vienna Coffee Company
As some of you may know, Tanzania is renowned for its famous Peaberry coffee. Coincidentally, Vienna has featured Tanzania Peaberry in previous years. Peaberry coffee develops when only one coffee bean forms inside the coffee cherry, a topic we covered in our initial release blog, “Appreciating Tanzanian Peaberry Coffee.”
Tanzania Mwika North
Now, the excitement for another relationship coffee from the hills of Tanzania has been quite evident. Thanks to our partnership with Deeper Roots, we’re lucky enough to receive this single origin coffee. We've eagerly awaited this year’s fresh crop of Tanzania Mwika North, and it truly lives up to the hype!
This new lot from Mwika AMCOS offers delightful tasting notes of caramel, dried fruit, and orange blossom, showcasing the close connection between farmers and roasters.
The story behind the coffee
Behind this coffee is a remarkable story. The coffee was processed using the Coffee Processing Unit (CPU or washing station), which recently became operational after a decade of dormancy. In short, this station has revolutionized coffee processing in the region.
The wet mill lacked infrastructure support until one of Deeper Roots’ previous Community Giveback Projects helped get the CPU up and running. Since the 2020 harvest, Mwika has been using it, and now we’re seeing the benefits with this year’s lot. The CPU brings a new level of consistency and quality control to Mwika North.
Previously, local farmers depulped their coffee at home before bringing parchment coffee to Mwika North. With the CPU in action, farmers can now focus on efficient harvesting, ensuring only the ripest cherries reach the mill. Centralizing depulping at Mwika North enhances control and standardization, elevating consistency and quality from bean to cup. This streamlined process not only improves coffee quality but also ensures prompt payments to farmers, which demonstrates its own efficiency.
The importance of relationship coffees
The story behind Tanzania Mwika North demonstrates why we emphasize relationship coffees. Through collaboration between farmers and roasters, there is promise of quicker payments, improved quality, and a sustainable future for Mwika North's coffee community.
Our relationship with this Tanzanian lot isn't just about coffee; it's a shared commitment to quality and sustainability. Over the years, we’ve nurtured this bond, ensuring every batch meets our standards and reflects the deep connection between farmers and roasters.
As we proudly present this year's batch of Tanzania Mwika North, it accents our dedication to provide craft coffee that enriches the lives of customers and producers alike by providing an experience grounded in excellence and hospitality. With this coffee, we celebrate the impact of partnership and the progress it brings, from the fields of Tanzania to our cups at Vienna Coffee. We hope you enjoy our featured coffee for July as much as we do!
