Here at Vienna, we are committed to treading lightly on our planet and keeping a low impact. In 2019 we moved to completely compostable bags to help keep them out of landfills. While that was a step in the right direction, we realized that sustainability refers to all aspects of our company. Since we are coffee roasters, we need to keep our biggest commodity, the coffee, as fresh as possible so that you get the best coffee available.
Just in time for Earth Day, we have teamed up with Savor Brands in Honolulu, Hawaii to develop new coffee bags. These bags are foil, which does the absolute best job in keeping coffee fresh, but has not traditionally been recyclable… that is, until now. Savor Brands is excited to offer a new solution to foil bag recycling. Their new program completely repurposes the bags for other applications. This allows us to package our roasted beans in bags that maximize quality while still offering the capability to recycle.
Here are the details from Savor Brands on their R+R program:
“The Savor Brands R+R™ Program is part of our ongoing commitment to make sustainability easy and efficient for our partners and your customers. By reprocessing and repurposing the packaging we create, we are doing our part to help support the world we want to live in.
The Savor Brands approach to packaging revolves around protecting the coffee bean and the entire footprint generated by its journey, farm to cup. An imprint is created at every level of the coffee supply chain; the farm where it is grown and processed, the logistics required to reach the intended destination, roasting and packaging, distribution, and finally at the point where we brew in the café or at home.
With this program, you will be able to recycle both the bag and the tin ties. We have two boxes located in our cafe near the front doors that are clearly marked for bag recycling. All you’ll need to do is remove the tin tie from your bag, drop the tie in the Tie Box, and the bag into the Bag Box.
The collected bag waste and tin ties are processed separately for reprocessing and repurposing. We’re really excited to take this additional step towards sustainability in our business and hope that you will be too!
