A Journey to Shantawene Village
Nestled in the Bensa District of Sidama, Ethiopia, a region renowned for its exceptional coffee, lies Shantawene Village. Here, coffee is a centuries-old tradition, dating back to its discovery in the mid-9th century. Our Shantawene Natural comes from this historic village, specifically from a mill operated by the Dukamo Family.
In 2006, brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo established Daye Bensa, a coffee business that has since become an example for quality and innovation in the area. Daye Bensa collaborates with local farmers and their own plantation in Shantawene to produce coffees that are not only delicious but also sustainable and ethically produced.
Natural Processed Coffees
This Shantawene Natural is dried using the natural process, where coffee cherries are dried in the sun with the bean still inside the fruit. This method is known to enhance the coffee's natural sweetness and brings rich, fruit-forward flavors.
As the cherries dry on raised beds, meticulous care is taken to hand-sort and remove any that don't meet high standards. This attention to detail ensures that every batch of Shantawene Natural is perfect, with medium body, bright fruity acidity, and notes of raspberry, plum, and lavender.
At Vienna Coffee Company, we lightly roast our Shantawene beans. This careful roasting process highlights the coffee's natural dark fruit notes and preserves its flavors.
